The Tamil militants in Sri Lanka fighting for a separate homeland within Sri Lanka have dubbed the Sri Lankan government’s unilateral ceasefire for a couple of days, to enable innocent civilians to move out of the war zone as an “eyewash”. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are demanding that the Sri Lankan government order a permanent ceasefire that has international backing. Though the military has asked civilians to make use of the ceasefire to move to safer zones, only 44 people are known to have crossed into government regulated areas out of the rebel-controlled war zone. The UN observes that around 100,000 people are holed up along with the militants in just 2 kilometers of government declared “no-fire” zone.
